The Getaway is the first track from the band's eleventh studio album of the same name. The song was released as a preview track for the album on the band's YouTube channel on May 26, 2016.
Fans were able to pre-order the album through the band's website where they were able to purchase various packages which include "Dark Necessities" on a webstore exclusive cassette single, also containing "The Getaway" on it's b-side. Also, fans who pre-ordered any of the packages got a digital download of "The Getaway", "Dark Necessities" and "We Turn Red" for free.
It made it's live debut at the BottleRock Napa Valley festival in Napa, CA on May 29, 2016, however, the song had actually been teased during their performances of "Give It Away" at Ace Hotel for the Feel the Bern Benefit Concert in Los Angeles, CA in February 5, 2016, and again at the Super Bowl 50 party in San Francisco, CA the following day.

“The song ‘The Getaway’ is about heartbreak and wanting that feeling with a special person where you’re just two people in a bubble listening to music and nothing else really matters for that time,” he reveals. “I wanted that song to represent the entire record, because to me it was the most different sounding that we had even been since we started. It was a song based on loops and it just had a different slant to the rhythm, and I thought it should be our first single, just to say, ‘This is who we are now.
