Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American rock band formed by Anthony Kiedis, then What Is This members Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons, and former What Is This and Fear bassist Flea in Los Angeles in 1983 as Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem. They reportedly performed two concerts under this name.

They soon changed their name to The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Note the word "the" in the band's name at this time.

They hired then Fear drummer Spit Stix as producer and recorded their 1983 Demo. They did the Red Hot Chili Peppers 1983 Tour soon after.

After this, Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons quit to concentrate on What Is This.

Weirdos members Dix Denney and Cliff Martinez auditioned as replacements. Dix didn't pass the audition, but Cliff did. Instead of Dix, Jack Sherman got the job as the band's guitarist.

The band's second line-up was Anthony Keidis, Jack Sherman, Flea, and Cliff Martinez. This line-up recorded the band's first album The Red Hot Chili Peppers and wrote half of the songs on the band's second album Freaky Styley, but didn't play on Freaky Styley.

Part way through the writing of Freaky Styley, Jack Sherman was fired and Hillel Slovak rejoined.

Now, the band was Anthony Keidis, Hillel Slovak, Flea, and Cliff Martinez. They hired Parliament and Funkadelic leader George Clinton as producer.

They lived with George Clinton for a week and then moved into a nearby house.

They recorded Freaky Styley.

They hired Keith Levine as producer and recorded demos of songs that were later on The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

Cliff Martinez was fired and Jack Irons rejoined.

The band was now back to its original line-up.

The band hired Michael Beinhorn as producer and recorded and released The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

Original guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose in 1988 and original drummer Jack Irons quit soon after.

Former The Headhunters, Parliament, and Funkadelic guitarist DeWayne McKnight and former Dead Kennedys drummer D.H. Peligro joined.

The band was now Anthony Keidis, Dewayne McKnight, Flea, and D.H. Peligro.

Dewayne McKnight was fired and replaced by former IKE and Thelonious Monster guitarist John Frusciante.

The band was now Anthony Keidis, John Frusciante, Flea, and D.H. Peligro. This line-up wrote the songs "Taste the Pain", "Stone Cold Bush", and "Sexy Mexican Maid".

D.H. Peligro was fired a short time later.

They borrowed drummer Philip Fisher from Fishbone to record "Taste the Pain".

In 1988, the band hired former Toby Redd drummer Chad Smith. He has been the band's drummer ever since.

The band was now Anthony Keidis, John Frusciante, Flea, and Chad Smith. This line-up recorded most of Mother's Milk and all of Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

Mother's Milk is the first album the band released without the word "the" in their name.

They hired Rick Rubin as producer and recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

They started the Blood Sugar Sex Magik Tour. John Frusciante quit part way through the tour.

In 1992, guitarist Arik Marshall joined. The band was now Anthony Keidis, Arik Marshall, Flea, and Chad Smith.

The band resumed the Blood Sugar Sex Magik Tour.

In 1993, guitarist Jesse Tobias joined.

The band was now Anthony Keidis, Jesse Tobias, Flea, and Chad Smith.

In 1994, then former Jane's Addiction and former Deconstruction guitarist Dave Navarro joined.

The band was now Anthony Keidis, Dave Navarro, Flea, and Chad Smith. This line-up recorded most of One Hot Minute.

In 1998, Dave Navarro was fired and John Frusciante was rehired.

They recorded and released Californication.

MusiCares2010

In 2007, Josh Klinghoffer joined as a second guitarist.

In 2009, John Frusciante quit for a second time, making Josh Klinghoffer the band's sole guitarist.

They recorded and released I'm With You.

In 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame.

They recorded and released The Getaway.

In 2019, they parted ways with Josh Klinghoffer and John Frusciante rejoined a second time.
